In the early industrialized society it was naturally the factories that consumed the most of the energy, and they still are heavy users. But modern man has amped up his personal usage of energy to higher levels than ever before.

And by assuming a more relaxed driving style with your car - not the same as driving as a snail, mind you - you can save not barely on fuel, but on tires and the rest of the automobile as well.
If the entire population of a large country like the US could manage to actually turn off their television every night, instead of leaving it in standby mode, that would quickly be equivalent of the power from an entire nuclear power plant.
