Wood For Fuel At Alms By Anthony Fontanelle Who said that the world of racing was all about burning rubber and using up conventional fuel? It does look like the trend is changing and even the racing arena would be going green.
In Rapid City, South Dakota, a company named the KL Process Design Group has come up with a new kind of fuel that would one day become the racing fuel for the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). This fuel is known as cellulosic E85 racing ethanol and the future has already come. See, the fuel would now be used for the ALMS 2008 season.
It is interesting to note that this cellulosic E85 is actually a product of waste wood and other biodegradable waste products that have the same composition as wood like switchgrass and citrus. The waste wood goes through a process which then turns it into usable fuel.
The very first time that the cellulosic E85 ethanol fuel will be used for racing would be on the March 15th season opener with Corvette Racing being the first team to use the fuel. The event would be the
56th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. It would be interesting to see just how the fuel really makes the vehicles soar. It would also be great to find out just how well a racing car would perform using the fuel. Or, on the other hand, people would also be able to spot the difference between a race car using conventional fuel and one that uses the new E85. It would also be interesting to find out if vehicles with ordinary GMC truck parts would also work fine with this energy source.
Scott Atherton, the president and chief honcho of the ALMS, mentioned via The Auto Channel that such fuel would be a milestone and an achievement not only for motorsports but also for fuel technologies and for those who are looking at alternative fuel sources. He also continued, "The American Le Mans Series was recently recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the only motorsports entity to meet the criteria for 'green racing.' Introducing cellulosic E85 racing ethanol to our series with one of our most noted championship teams does nothing but reinforce our commitment to be the global leader in green racing."
