Fuel Saving Suggestions And Recommendations For Improved Vehicle Performance Part 2 By GARKO In recent days, I have been actively seeking out any bona fide suggestions for procuring increased MPG and I found out an interesting correlation. The tips that actually work to increase MPG also save you on additional vehicle repairs brought on by poor driving habits.
If you are not paying $100s per year to keep your vehicle under complete a-z warranty or you have a masochistic streak which genuinely gets enjoyment from taking your dysfunctional car to the mechanic and being taken to the cleaners with unnecessary vehicle repairs and having your auto sit for days at the mechanic while you take the subways and fret over it like a father-to-be in a hospital waiting room then perhaps want to heed these tips. Saving money on gas and on vehicle repairs are cousins.
Think about what else you could do with the money that you are wasting on unnecessary vehicle problems . Go on a vacation? Get a better automobile? Do some home improvements? Without a doubt there are better things you can do with your cash than an endless stream of repairs on your vehicle!
One year ago the average cost per gallon of fuel was $2.13. Today it is $3.08 considering all 50 states. In 2004 the cost of a barrel of oil was $50 and people were outraged. In 2007 the cost of a barrel of oil is $100 and you don't hear much griping because the broad public have gone into apathy. Of course, the steep devaluation of the dollar also plays a part. It can be observed that while the cost of fuel has soared, the dollar value in decline has also made the cost of fuel appear to go up more rapidly than it actually has. All in all, it is a severe situation for the US economy and fuel prices. If you are not waving the white towel and are still seeking to maximize your fuel efficiency and keep as much money as possibly in your wallet and out of the greedy, slimy hands of oil corporation executives then there are actions you can take.
Do you remember the episode of the original Star Trek where Captain Kirk, the great captain of the Starship Enterprise ends up in a world that is paralleling gangland Chicago and he is attempting to manuever an old style vehicle and master the shifting of gears and somehow makes his way down the street with many fits and starts and convulsions? That was not a training manual! The point? Be a smooth driver. Frequent short stops aren't helpful for your car or your vehicle's MPG. So anticipate stops whenever you can. Permitting your car coast to a stop is a good way to lower fuel consumption
Obey the speed limit. Speeding is a
very expensive way to go. Flying above the maximum allowed speed may get you where you want to go in less time, but it also results in more visits to the gasoline pump and perhaps even a couple to the local traffic court. Oh, and speaking about traffic court. be VERY attentive about driving around there. that is where all the lousy drivers have to go. that is one reason. Another reason is that the city looks at it as a golden opportunity to hit you with another traffic citation while you are in the area since you were bad enough of a driver to get the first one. They will do something like having a "no turn on red light" sign in a place that is hard to see and they will give you a steeper penalty. I found just such a trap in downtown Pasadena There was a sign that said that turning right on red at that traffic light would be a THREE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLAR fine! Can't say that these people do not possess a sense of humor!
Let me share what I found out about driving at higher speeds. Faster driving is going to lessen your fuel performance proportionately. So the higher you speed, the harder the fuel performance hit on your vehicle. Driving seventy five mph as opposed to 65 mph will lessen your fuel performance by 10 percent. Crusing along at 70 mph instead of 55 mph will lower your lessen your fuel performance by 18 percent. So stop regarding speed limit signs as suggestions and slow down. Adhering to the speed limit is the safest and cheapest way to drive.
Most other advice are just plain contradictory or wrong... Some articles suggested don't use your AC which is not very helpful if you are a resident of or it is in the summer in Manhattan! Then I found one article that says to keep the automobile windows open in the city streets but to keep your AC on while on the parkways because having the windows open while driving at high speeds causes drag which increases fuel consumption. Who's right? Who's wrong? Who cares? Does it increase MPG? No, probably not!
The most bona fide solution to increase your MPG, with gasoline prices in the $3-4.50 range during the last year or so is to sever your umbilical cord... the one that connects you to the gasoline pump and drop your chains of slavery to the oil companies and....
Convert to a hydrogen engine! How would it be you never had to purchase another gallon of fuel again? Convert your fuel engine to hydrogen. If you do a partial (hybrid) conversion then you can expect to see increased MPG of up to 30% maybe more. If you do this and also add acetone to your gas tank (which will save you another 25% or so) then you will have reduced your fuel consumption by a combined 50%! Put in about 2-3 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons of fuel and the fuel will evaporate less easily and you increase your MPG by 25% or more. If you do a full gas to hydrogen conversion then you will never have to pump another gallon of fuel for the rest of your life. It is very simple to do, costs hardly anything, helps the environment and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to conserve resources instead of using up more than your fair share.
